WSET Level 2 - Overview
WSET Level 2 is the perfect course for those that are serious about deepening their passion for wine and understanding the art form, from industry professionals to wine enthusiasts.
You’ll learn all about grape types, from the principal grape varietals to the regionally significant grape varietals. Moreover you’ll learn what factors affect each region, from it’s terroir to it’s styles and it’s cultural significance.
Discover the factors that affect the style and quality of a whole host of wines and the different impacts these factors will have on the final flavours.
By the end of the course you’ll be able to describe the liquid you love with confidence and clarity.
With a rich combination of tastings, covering a range of different wines every day and exploring the theoretical frameworks that underlie wine production, you’ll be well on your way to wine expertise.
WSET Level 2 - Course concept
The Course Covers:
- How to taste and describe wine using the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine®(SAT)
- How environmental factors, grape-growing, winemaking and maturation options influence the style and quality of wines made from eight principal grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio/Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah/Shiraz
- The style and quality of wines: made from 22 regionally important grape varieties (e.g. Nebbiolo, Malbec and Viognier) produced in over 70 geographical indications (GIs) around the world
- How grape varieties and wine making processes influence key styles of: Sparkling wines, Fortified wines
- Key labelling terms used to indicate origin, style and quality
- Principles and processes involved in the storage and service of wine

What you’ll learn
The world is full of hundreds of different grape varieties, but only some can be used for wine, and some are more common than others. You’ll learn about the principal grape varieties that are considered the most prolific and discover their unique characteristics, flavours and wines that they can become.
Not all wines are created equally! Together we’ll explore the key styles and differences between wines made from 8 of the principal grape varieties:
- Chardonnay
- Pinot Grigio/Gris
- Sauvignon Blanc
- Riesling
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Merlot
- Pinot Noir
- Syrah/Shiraz
We’ll also learn how different factors like environment, grape growing methods and maturation can affect the final product in terms of style and quality in wine produced around the world.
It’s important to understand that wine comes in a multitude of different forms, beyond the complex differences in still wines! You’ll discover the key processes and characteristics of not only still, but also sparkling and fortified wines, diving into what makes them unique and the great variety of styles within each category.
The world of wine is characterised by vast regional differences, with unique climates and environments massively affecting the wine they produce. You’ll explore over 70 different regions with geographical indications, with insights into their unique ecosystems, wine-making techniques and products.
Knowing what’s going on in a bottle of wine can be tricky sometimes. With the wealth of different labelling systems and wine names, it’s important to be able to read and understand a label, whether it’s a simple table wine to a high end french regional wine. By the end of the course you’ll be able to see through the label into the liquid beneath and know what you’re getting with even the most complex of labels.
Tasting wine is a fine art that requires lots of training. This wine course gives you the basic tools and practise you need to begin understanding the complex flavours in wine and training your palate to be able to recognise them.
Two things that have always gone hand in hand are wine and food. Pairing them perfectly requires a good knowledge of how different flavours work together. You’ll discover how each of the main flavour types interact with each other and which flavours tend to work best with others. By understanding that framework you’ll be able to apply it to wines and find the perfect match for the food you’re tasting with it.
The storage and service of wine is essential to great wine experiences. If you’re starting your journey on the road to sommelier or simply want to maintain and express the best quality of the wines you love, this aspect of the course will help you do just that. We’ll go over all the best practices for storing your wines in the correct way, as well as all the tips and tricks for serving the liquid we love perfectly every time.
The Island of Mallorca is home to one of the most important wine making regions in Spain, D.O. Binissalem! This makes it the perfect place to explore the world of wine, with a guided visit to one of the top vineyards in the area so you can see firsthand how wine is made from grape to glass.
You’ll also have time to sample the blossoming food and drink scene in the capital city where our Academy is located, Palma de Mallorca, eating and drinking at some amazing restaurants and bars and getting a true taste of the island. And of course you’ll have time to adventure around the other towns, mountains and coastlines and see for yourself why Mallorca is a top holiday destination worldwide.

Since then we trained and brought thousands of students to become masters of their craft and brought knowledge to thousands of lovers of beverage.
